This is my planning page. This page will focus on the process of creating my final pieces. This includes my Drawn drafts, Digital drafts, Poses and costumes, Contents page analysis, Double page article and my Camera techniques video. This page also includes the photos that I took for my final pieces, both on-site and off-site.
DRAWN DRAFTS
These are the first drafts of my music magazine, I drew all of the pages and included most of the magazine conventions.
I started the drawn drafts by figuring out what different camera shots I will use for the magazine. For the front pages I drew images using a close up and a mid-shot which may or may not appear in my final product. Then I constructed the boxes for the cover lines. |
For the contents page, I began by adding the boxes where the images would be. From there I was able to know where all the other features such as the sublines and the category features.
|
For my double page, I started looking at various example of the layout by actual music magazines. This helped me gain some insight on how I would style out my double page. Then I started to draw the pictures of the artist on one of the page on the double. I already knew how I wanted the images to look like so I draw the images from my head.
DIGITAL DRAFTS
These are the starting templates that I will use to design my magazine pages. I have created these templates using photoshop, my final products will be based on these drafts.
Cover page drafts
I decided to use answers from my questionnaire to help create my drafts. For example I used a mid shot for my first digital draft as it was suggested in my questionnaire. I'm imported pictures of a silhouette onto photoshop and adjusted the size of it to make it a mid shot.
|
For my second draft I decided to use a close up of a silhouette. Close ups are a very common camera shot used in Grime/Hip-Hop/Rap magazines. I then moved the image in front of the masthead to give it a cool effect. I also changed around the layout some of the conventions such as the price and website to give the front cover a new look.

Contents page drafts
The main idea I had was to make the contents page a white a gold theme so I based my draft on this theme. I made sure that the main image on the contents page will stand out by making sure it was the largest section on the page.
|
The colours that were used for this design were based on the responses from my questionnaire. Red and white was of the more popular requests.
|
Double page drafts
The main idea of this double page was to have the picture take up the whole both pages. I think that this would look good on my double page.
|
The concept of this draft was to include a photo on one side of the page and all the writing is on the side of the page. This template is used quite a lot in many magazines.

POSES & COSTUME
This section is about the different poses and pieces of costume that will be seen in the majority of pictures that are associated with the genre grime. I have selected 8 poses or costumes that are seen regularly in the grime industry.
Hand Gestures
Different hand gestures are very popular in the Grime music scene today. It is common for most grime artist to pose with hand gestures when taking picture. Each sign would have individual connotations, these signs mostly are significant to the artist.
Straight Faces
It's also common for Grime artist to pose with straight faces. With this pose their NVC clearly is represented as serious people. This pose connotes with power and authority.
Hats
Hats are another fashion trend that is commonly sported by well known Grime artists. Most of the hats wore by the artist are of sports teams or they are trying to promote their own brand. JME for example is wearing a 'Boy Better Know' hat which is a crew that he is in .
Chains and jewelry
Chains are a popular piece of fashion that most artist wear. This represents their wealth and status. The grime artist do like to show their riches by wearing flashy chains.
Cigarettes and smoke
Cigars and smoke are used frequently in the music video shoots. The use of smoke can connote to rebellion. As most of the cigars used contain weed, this gives the impression that the artist can do what ever they want.
Crouching
Crouching is a popular pose for grime artist. It symbolises power and may patronise the person who is looking at the picture, which could connote power.
Tattoos
Most grime artist have tattoos, this again connotes to the rebellious characteristics of an grime artist. The majority of tattoos that people get are of something that is very significant in there life.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses can be associated with grime artist. This can be seen as a way that the artist showing their wealth and power. This is because they can afford expensive sunglasses and are financially stable to be able to buy these things.
CONTENTS ANALYSIS
This is my contents analysis where I will be creating the cover stories, the features and the regulars of my magazine. The cover stories were mixed of stories about fictional characters and non-fictional characters. The regulars were about content in the magazines that appear regularly.
DOUBLE PAGE ARTICLE
This is the article that I have composed that will appear in my final product. It is in a Q&A form with a fictional character that I made up. I created the answers to be as if I was a grime artist on tour, also I tried to make it as realistic as possible.
CAMERA TECHNIQUES VIDEO
In this video we learned about all the different camera technique that are used in videos and movies.
ON SITE PHOTOSHOOT
These are 30 images that I took on site, I only used a few of these photos on my final pieces. The photoshoot was taken place in a classroom in the college. We used professional cameras and lighting kits. This help the pictures to be crisp and high quality.
Photos I like
I like these picture because I feel the NVC fits my chosen genre which is grime/music. I also like these picture because the lighting enhances the look of the pictures. I like the second photo because it makes the artist look more intimidating and serious. I picked the third image as the NVC of the hands in the pockets matches the genre of grime.
Photos I dislike
I picked these photos because most of them were not in focus which made the photos look blurry. I pick the first picture because you couldn't see the face of the artist. The second picture was taken without the flash kit which made it look and blue
LOCATION RECCE
OFF SITE PHOTOSHOOT
Here are the 30 pictures that I have taken for my magazine pieces. They were taken off site near my local area, I used a camera to take these pictures.
Photos that I like
I like the first picture because I like the red background and it could work really well with theme of my magazine. I chose the second photo because the NVC of the 'artist' looks could and the background complements the picture. The third picture that I choose included a wall with graffiti on it which I really liked.
Photos that I dislike
These are the pictures that I took which I thought was poor quality. I chose the first picture because the NVC in my opinion wasn't up to standards. The second picture was shot at the wrong angle because the shadows of the trees were apparent on the walls. I picked the third picture because the background was quite awful as you can see.
